Laurel Ellen Roush
Fine Art Mosaic
As a self taught artist, I started my career painting
murals and faux finishes. About 12 years
ago I was lucky enough to visit the Louvre, in Paris, where I was blown away by
the intricacy and magnificence of the mosaics.
I started with a hammer and some glass scraps, and over the years I have
refined my technique.
I am interested in using glass in a painterly way, so
that the glass is cut as if it was a paint stroke. I first sketch out my picture, and my next step is to choose the glass
colors. Sometimes I pre-paint the board
using acrylics, other times I just let it flow as it goes. I cut each piece as I go, and glue them
down. Once the glue is dry, I grout with
white sanded grout. After cleaning the
grout I stain it to visually unite all the pieces. Once dry I clean the pieces again. Each piece takes many hours, the big ones can
take up to 40 hours.
I have always loved impressionist paintings because I
love the visual texture, and my favorite
thing about my mosaics is the texture and shine of the glass. I love that when people see my work their
first instinct is to reach out and touch it.
I love bright, rich colors and I think that my work feels joyful.
I hope that you enjoy my labor of love. I am also available for commission work. I can work in your colors and subject matter.
